Champagne and Aishihik First Nations (CAFN) is calling for expressions of interest for the Property Services Department

CAFN Property Services is accepting applications from persons who are interested in auxiliary on-call employment as a Labourer to provide wood stove and chimney cleaning for the 2017-18 heating season.

Work will primarily consist of sweeping chimneys and removing ash from wood stoves and wood furnaces. This includes rental units and Elders homes on CAFN Settlement Land in Haines Junction, Canyon, Champagne and Takhini River subdivision. Work is part-time from September 2017 to March 2018, and hours of work will vary throughout this period. Work may require overtime and a schedule outside of normal business hours (after 4:30, or on weekends, depending on the weather).

Your tasks may include:

Inspecting the chimney or flue before cleaning

Climbing ladder to access the roof for cleaning the chimney and the chimney cap

Using brushes on extending rods to clean the chimney or flue

Protecting the surrounding area so that soot and debris doesn’t escape into a room

Removing and re-installing pipes connecting furnace to flue as required, using hand tools

Removing soot, ash, and debris from the fireplace or appliance, chimney and chimney cap, then placing ash and soot in a metal container with a lid to prevent dust entering the room

Inspecting interior of chimney and firebox to ensure completion of cleaning process, using flashlight and mirror if required

Advising occupants about any potential hazards and faults, and recommend when the chimney and appliance will need cleaning again

Advising occupants on the safe operation and maintenance of chimneys, appliances and flues

May also make oral or written reports on condition of chimney and appliance to Supervisor.

Most of the work will be in CAFN houses, but may also include heating systems in industrial or commercial premises.

Must possess good verbal and written communication skills

A valid Yukon Class 5 driver’s license is required with a current abstract

The employee will be required to follow safe work practices. Work will require working at heights using an approved personal fall arrest system, and wearing personal protective equipment to avoid breathing soot. Fall Protection Systems training is required.
