CAFN ANNOUNCES NEW ÄGHÀAŁĀN ENROLLMENT ACT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

December 16, 2016

Dakwäkäda (Haines Junction), Yukon – The Champagne and Aishihik First Nations (CAFN) government is proud to announce that the Chief and Council passed our new Enrollment Act titled Äghàałān (My Relatives) on Friday, December 16, 2016.

“This may be one of the most important laws our First Nation ever passes, because it is about who we are as Champagne and Aishihik people,” said Dän Nätthe Ada Kaaxnox (Chief Steve Smith).  “The Äghàałān Act ensures CAFN has a fair, consistent process for enrollment today and in the future as our nation grows.”

The new Act identifies criteria on who can enroll as CAFN dän (people) and provides CAFN with a clear, fair, consistent process for enrollment.

“Developing this law has been a long and challenging process and we thank all the Citizens who participated in consultation on the Act,” said Chief Smith.  “The CAFN Council is proud to fulfill the resolutions on enrollment passed by our General Assembly in 2004, 2005 and 2010.”

The Act will take effect on February 14, 2017, the anniversary of the presentation of Together Today for our Children Tomorrow to Parliament in Ottawa.
