Innovative Log Homes Project Seeking Participants Crew Leader (1) and Trainees (4 – 6)
Champagne and Aishihik First Nations (CAFN) is working to provide more sustainable housing, while also developing the skills and capacity of citizens to build log housing. In Haines Junction, we are building two small log houses (14’ x 24’) using 6×8 squared logs, with a strong emphasis on energy efficiency in these buildings.
Location: Haines Junction
Date: The duration of this project 8-10 weeks, starting June 5, 2023.
Crew Lead Trainee Salary: $30.97/hour
Trainee Salary: $27.41/hour
Job Summary
We are seeking CAFN citizens to join two highly-experienced log building instructors in this training project
to construct an energy efficient log home. The exterior structure is built using 6 x 8 squared logs in a pieceon-
piece method, with rigid insulation and vertical board & batten wood siding. The interior is one
bedroom, with a bathroom and an open kitchen/living room area. The ceiling has high layers of insulation
to increase energy efficiency.
Participants are required to have some skills in carpentry or log home construction. They must be in good
physical condition & able to lift up to 25kg. Knowledge & experience working with light duty tools &
machinery (saws, drills, etc.) is required. They must be available for the entire duration. One experienced
skilled Crew Leader with minimum 3rd Year Carpenter preferred – or related building skills with proven
Leadership experience, and semi-skilled participant trainees (up to 6) to work to complete the log homes
in an outdoor learning environment.
