Wellness Hub

CAFN Community Wellness Hub

What’s happening Next?

The Project Team is working with Community Wellness and Property Services to develop and finalize the Community Wellness Hub design and apply for capital funding in the spring of 2027. The schedule allows for construction to begin in 2027 if funding is secured.

Project Overview

  • CAFN is planning a new building to bring the community together in Dakwäkäda. This Chief and Council initiative will include a multipurpose community gathering and activity space, a new youth centre and a home for the Community Wellness Dän Ts’än Nännji Department’s programs and services (replacing the existing Healing House and youth centre).
  • The building will be a place where people can gather and support one another on their healing paths through connection, cultural activities and events, support services and programming. It will create opportunities for generations to learn from each other in ways that reflect CAFN’s understanding of community.
  • This initiative has involved input from the community through dedicated engagement sessions in 2024 and 2025. For years, Council has heard about the need for a community wellness space, and while a Council-led initiative, Citizens have played a major role in shaping the vision for a Community Wellness Hub.
  • A Feasibility Study was conducted with community engagement, followed by a Business Case. These documents are being used to inform the design, programming, budget and development of funding partnerships.

Project Approach and Timeline

  • 2024: Project Visioning
  • 2025: Feasibility and Concept Development - A Feasibility Study was produced in 2024 and involved significant engagement with the CAFN community to understand what the community wants and needs from this space.  Following a Feasibility Study, a Business Case was created to understand the steps and process to reach project completion
  • 2026-2027: Detailed Design - We are here! The project team is currently working to develop the design to start construction in the summer of 2027.
  • 2027: Confirm Capital Funding - The Project Team will submit for Federal Capital Funding in 2027.
  • 2027: Estimate Construction start - Following the design completion and securing funding, the project will begin construction, estimated in the summer of 2027.
  • 2029: Estimated Construction Completion

Community Survey:

The survey asked two questions:

1. What does a healthy community look like for you?
2. What spaces or activities would you like to see in your community to support your wellness?

The survey was available online from November 16th until January 12th and was advertised through social media, newsletter and email, as well as in person at the community event and through the Wellness department.

There were 92 responses to the survey – an incredible turnout! Thank you to all who participated!

What’s next:

Stay tuned for the next community event in Spring 2024. We will be sharing what we have heard so far and how it is being translated into becoming a building!

A: It came from citizens at the outset. Council has heard again and again the need for Community wellness space from the community and is trying to reflect what they have heard by initiating this project.

A: The project team will take the time needed to do this project in a good way, but also acknowledges the crucial role this wellness hub will play in advancing much needed community wellness, and fulfilling council’s goals of delivering this project to the community. At this time we are working toward opening the doors to this new building in the fall of 2026.
