Chief and Council Spotlight: June 8-12

Yukon Days is a unified advocacy trip for territorial leaders that takes place annually. It is a key opportunity for trilateral engagement between Yukon First Nations, the Yukon government, and Canada. By standing together in Ottawa, our leaders are:
-Calling for federal investment that reflects northern realities
-Pushing for programs and policies that uphold Yukon First Nations Self-Government Agreements
-Working to secure practical, long-term benefits for CAFN Citizens and future generations

Advancing CAFN Priorities at Yukon Days and Hydro 4: This week, Chief Joe has been working in Ottawa on behalf of CAFN Citizens, bringing our voices and priorities directly to federal decision-makers.

As part of Yukon Days (June 9–10, 2026) in Ottawa, Chief Joe joined Yukon First Nations Chiefs, Council of Yukon First Nations Grand Chief Math’ieya Alatini, and Premier Currie Dixon to present a united Yukon agenda to federal Ministers – including Minister Rebecca Chartrand, the federal Minister of Northern and Arctic Affairs and Minister responsible for CanNor.

Together with Yukon partners, Chief Joe helped advance shared several key priorities on behalf of CAFN Citizens, including:

– Health and wellness

– Energy and long-term energy security

– Salmon and healthy waters

– Arctic security and northern infrastructure

– Collaborative fiscal policy that respects Yukon First Nations’ self-government

In meeting with Minister Chartrand, Chief Joe highlighted CAFN priorities and the importance of local solutions to local challenges, echoing Minister Chartrand’s commitment to being a bridge-builder for northern communities.
For CAFN, Yukon Days is about showing up with a united voice, ensuring that federal decisions respect our Self-Government Agreements, and securing lasting benefits for CAFN Citizens today and for the generations to come.
Chief Joe also joined fellow Yukon First Nations Chiefs and the Yukon Premier in meetings with Minister Chartrand to discuss the future of clean, reliable energy in the Yukon highlighting the “Hydro 4” initiative – a potential hydro project in an overlap region of four Yukon First Nations’ traditional territories. Through the Powering Canada Strong strategy, these conversations focused on:

-Hydro 4 as a potential project in an overlap region of four Yukon First Nations’ traditional territories
-Strengthening grid reliability and long-term regional sustainability
-Ensuring that large-scale energy projects are founded on true partnership, with Yukon First Nations leading the way

For CAFN, these discussions are about more than power – they’re about protecting our lands and waters, supporting community-driven economic opportunities, and planning for future generations.
